Almost 100 Top Rated Books (Mostly Nonfiction)

Posted by Kelley Bren Burke on

I love books so much that I used to roller skate up and down my block while reading my latest library book. Yes, I was THAT cool as a kid. As an adult, I worked at Barnes & Noble Booksellers for 20 years. Now that I'm self employed, I read more than ever. I listen to audio books while I make jewelry, and I read most evenings.  I've read and loved each one of these books. I'm only including books that have at least a 3.7 average star rating on Goodreads. Most of them are nonfiction: memoirs, psychology, self help,...

How a Daily Meditation Practice Changed My Life

Posted by Kelley Bren Burke on

Meditation was my gateway drug. It led me persistently down the path to becoming a self improvement junkie. In 2016, my goal was to begin a new happiness boosting habit each month. Then I would carry out the new practice for the rest of the year. I hoped that these small habits would slowly change my life. And you know what? They did.  I started with meditation. An SUV drove towards my car on a quiet neighborhood street. It was barreling down the middle of the road, forcing me to veer closer to the curb. “Nice driving, dink!” I muttered. In a lovingkindness meditation you first send positive wishes to yourself, and then to others....

My Zen Month Experiment: A Flawed Attempt at a Month of Greater Positivity

Posted by Kelley Bren Burke on

Zen Month was challenging from the start. Well, the first few hours were easy. Since I work alone, all I had to do was not talk aloud to myself about anything negative. Friends, my performance was flawless.  Then I got into my husband Chris’s car after work. We were going out to dinner. We exchanged the “How was your day?” pleasantries. Then it was quiet. I thought about telling him about the annoying thread on our neighborhood social media page, NextDoor Kenny. Nope. Oh, god. What if not saying anything negative rendered me mute?  Instead I talked about my rules...

The Great Blogging Strike of 2016

Posted by Kelley Bren Burke on

I could not believe my website stats. They revealed that 13 people read my April blog post. Let’s break that down. Thirteen people read a blog that took hours of my life to write. That 13-Reader stat inspired The Great Blogging Strike of 2016.  I was pissed! Irrationally pissed, but pissed nonetheless. My thought process went a little like this: I’ll show them, those . . . non readers of my blog. I’m not gonna write another blog for a while! THAT will show them. THEN they’ll be sorry. Except, shit, no, they won’t be sorry. Cuz they wouldn’t even...
